Elder Law
We advise seniors and their families who are searching for long-term care solutions, assist with Medicaid planning and applications for state benefits, review long-term care provider contracts, assist with long-term care insurance challenges, and help ensure that estate planning documents contain protections, such as supplemental needs trusts and proper language in Durable Powers of Attorney, where appropriate.
Please note that we do not handle guardianship or elder abuse matters.
What is Elder LAW?
Elder law is a specialized area of legal practice that covers a wide range of legal matters, including estate planning, long-term care planning, and more, focusing on the needs of older adults.
The Role of an Elder Law Attorney
Our Seattle elder law attorneys provide counsel and advocacy for older adults and their family members on a variety of issues, including:
- Understanding available long-term care benefits and eligibility requirements
- Structuring financial assets to help with paying for long-term care while preserving assets when possible
- Advising on resources for identifying and evaluating long-term care options, such as adult family homes and assisted living facilities
- Assisting with accessing long-term care insurance benefits
- Advising on how to maintain need-based benefits such as SSI and Medicaid in the event of an inheritance or other financial windfall
- Ensuring that updated estate planning documents – such as Wills with Supplemental Needs Trusts and robust Durable Powers of Attorney – are in place
