Probate

At Salmon Bay Law Group, our attorneys have extensive experience with helping executors and personal representatives with the probate process.

What is Probate?

“Probate” is the process of proving and carrying out the wishes expressed in a decedent’s Last Will and Testament (“Will”). It is a formal procedure taken in coordination with a local court.

about probate in seattle and king county

When a resident of Seattle or King County passes away, one of the first inquiries is whether the decedent died with a Will. If there is a valid Will, the local court systems oversee the distribution of the decedent’s money and property (their “estate”) according to the Will.

At Salmon Bay Law Group, we work closely with the personal representative or executor nominated in a Will to administer the decedent’s estate. We first determine whether a probate is necessary, considering the decedent’s assets and estate plan, and then walk through each next step that will need to be taken.

What steps are involved for probate?

After the court appoints a personal representative, that person is responsible for several tasks. Some of these tasks include:

  • Locating and preparing an inventory of the decedent’s assets, debts, and liabilities
  • Notifying heirs, creditors, and other interested parties of the probate proceedings
  • Filing any necessary tax returns
  • Distributing assets to beneficiaries and heirs

Our goal is to help the personal representative of an estate navigate the probate process as smoothly as possible.
